For this Bonita Bay Group has been honored with many awards, including the national Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute, the Golf Digest Environmental Leader in Golf Award and the Lee Building Industry Association’s Pinnacle Award for Development Company of the Year.
Verandah’s emphasis on green building, its respect for the land and its comprehensive approach to sustainability earned the Fort Myers community the 2007 Green Building Best Practices Award from the Council for Sustainable Florida in a year that marked a record number of entries. Verandah, the 1,456-acre community created by Bonita Bay Group along a 1.75-mile stretch of the Orange River, earned the honor in the green building category, competing against several other entries submitted by municipalities and private companies.

Verandah, which won in the outstanding project category, was recognized for its development plan that preserved trees already in place.
Verandah – Florida’s first certified Green Land Development and recipient of the 2006 Environmental (ENVY) Award for demonstrating great care in preserving Florida’s unique environment – has added another environmental accolade to its long list of honors: the national “Because Green Matters” award presented by Project EverGreen.
Resource Conservation Systems (RCS) has earned the David W. York Reuse Award from the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA). The award recognizes leaders in promoting the Florida Water Resources Reuse Program. The FWEA awards committee chose RCS as the winning entry in the outstanding reclaimed water customer category. Last year, the Walt Disney World Company, Reedy Creek, was chosen for this award.
The East Lee County Council presented its annual William B. Davis Award for Palm Beach Boulevard Improvements to Verandah, The Bonita Bay Group’s 1,456 acre master-planned community located along the Orange River in Fort Myers.
Bonita Bay’s redesigned butterfly garden is one of just 16 entries to earn an Award of Excellence in the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association’s 2005 Landscape Awards Program. The six-year-old garden, which was refurbished and rededicated in April 2005, won the award in the renovation/redesign category for projects priced between $5,000 and $15,000.
Mediterra has been named the 2005 Award of Excellence winner by the Florida chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in the open space category. The 1,697-acre community being developed by The Bonita Bay Group in North Naples was chosen for the top award in the open space category for the blending of environmental and artistic design elements prioritizing beauty, function and the environment in the community’s greenways, streetscapes, parks, neighborhoods, amenities and open spaces.
Research conducted by two International College Professors has led to their being honored with the 2005 Sustainable Florida Educator Award. Katherine Dew, Ph.D., an adjunct professor of business, and Kris W. Thoemke, Ph.D., a former International College environmental management professor, are credited for authoring two case studies pertaining to sustainability practices used at The Brooks in Bonita Springs and The Old Collier Golf Club in Naples.
The Bonita Bay Group has been honored with the Florida Green Building Coalition’s first-ever Green Building Award for green land development. The company received the award May 26 in recognition of the coalition’s April 2003 certification of Verandah as Florida’s first green land development.
Six Southwest Florida homeowners are proving that using less water to create showcase landscapes is not only possible, it’s the perfect way to “grow green” while conserving water and money. Resource Conservation Systems and the South Florida Water Management District presented each with a 2004 Water Conservation Award for ending the year with the lowest water use in their individual communities, while surrounding their homes with lush plants, flourishing gardens, green lawns and colorful accents.
Resource Conservation Systems earned the Best in Class designation from the American Water Works Association during its 2004 Water Conservation Award for Excellence competition. The top award, which was presented by the Florida section of the AWWA at the annual fall conference, recognizes outstanding achievements in water efficiency, water supply and resource development initiatives.
Mediterra has been recognized by the Council for Sustainable Florida with the 2004 Promising Practices Award in its field, according to Sharon Cooper, executive director of the CSF. The annual awards program recognizes businesses and individuals for projects that manage, protect and restore Florida’s natural assets.
The Bonita Bay Group has received the first annual “Outstanding Business” Environmental Stewardship Award from the Estero Bay Agency on Bay Management (ABM). The company was chosen for its initiative in organizing the Water Enhancement and Restoration Coalition (WERC), a public/private partnership that is committed to enhancing and improving water quality and preserving water resources in Southwest Florida, including the long-term protection of Estero Bay.

The Club at Mediterra and golf superintendent Scott Whorrall earned the highest award in the private club category of the 2002 Environmental Leaders in Golf Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and Golf Digest magazine. The award is presented annually to the golf course superintendent of a property that represents the highest level of commitment to environmental stewardship. Mediterra is a master-planned community being developed by The Bonita Bay Group in North Naples.
